Caplan’s involvement included all aspects of the new site’s logistics design: warehouse sizing and storage configuration; determining quantities of material handling equipment and S/R dock doors; and, planning the site’s external and internal traffic flows.

This $50+ million project involved the strategic planning for a new site’s transition from a single-category site located in a new market to a multi-category site with distribution operations. Caplan’s involvement included project team facilitation, property analysis, site selection, facilities planning and logistics support.

Cost-neutral distribution re-design and improved customer service levels

Project Details:

This client contracted Caplan to re-design its distribution network in support of a shift from direct customer delivery to a retail distribution strategy. Our approach utilized zip-code level demand data to recreate the company’s existing supply chain. We then used a linear programming model to determine the most efficient, cost effective distribution design that supported the company’s new objective. Our solution resulted in 97% of the company’s 225 retail stores being within next day freight delivery.

Identified bottlenecks and recommended site maximum volume

Project Details:

The client asked Caplan to conduct a Due Diligence Assessment to determine the maximum volume a potential acquisition site was capable of supporting. We audited the plant’s existing infrastructure and operations, identified current and future bottlenecks and presented a capacity glidepath outlining the scope and capital required to remove intermediate bottlenecks up to a recommended site maximum.
